Students Sign Up to Become the Next Generation of Sporting Hero’s!
Students from South Gloucestershire and Stroud College (WISE) have signed up to become the next generation of sporting hero’s through the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Legacy programme Sport Makers.
Sport Makers is one of the governments key 2012 Legacy programmes aiming to use the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games to inspire the next generation of sport volunteers who will help to make sport happen in the West of England. The programme has so far seen over 400 people register to become a Sport Maker and help get their friends, family and/or colleagues physically active and taking part in sport in the West of England.
Over 173 students and staff attended Sport Makers convention and two 2 workshops where they received advice on how and what they can could through the Sport Makers programme. They also had a chance to speak to National Governing Bodies of sport and one of the Sport Makers ambassadors, Sue Wright who explained how valuable volunteers where to her and helped her become an international squash player.

"SGS Wise (formally Filton College) were thrilled to link with WESPORT and provide our Academic Sport learners with the opportunity to become Sportmakers. All year two learners engaged in a range of practical workshops following what proved to be an inspirational talk from Sue Wright (Olympic Ambassador). Sue’s message rang true with many, sharing her experiences and recollections of her very own influential Sportmaker her father. The Sportmakers programme has empowered learners to make a positive contribution to the community and in turn impact the health of the nation, here at SGS Wise we are delighted to support this national initiative"

“It has been great the way the college has embraced the Sport Maker programme. The students came up with some fantastic ways of getting more people participating in sport and we are already seeing some of the students logging their hours as they complete their Sport Maker activity.”
