Chairman’s Sport Awards 2011 Launched

Madam Chairman of Bath & North East Somerset Council, Councillor Sarah Bevan has kicked off the Chairman’s Sport Awards 2011 with a special launch event at the Guildhall, Bath, alongside British Racketlon Champion Jon Foulds and Contracts Manager for Aquaterra, Jamie Brown.

The awards will recognise the achievements and dedication of local sports people, volunteers and coaches. New categories for 2011 include Sports Person of the Year and Young Sports Leader Award.  The Healthy Lifestyles Achievement Award will recognise the achievement of individuals involved with community programmes such as cycling, walking, running and the Council’s Passport to Health scheme. Young talented athletes from the area accepted on to the new Sports Aid Spring Board Programme, supported by the Council and Aquaterra Leisure, will also receive an award.


This year, the Chairman’s Special Award will recognise ‘Personal Excellence’, the theme for the Chairman’s year in office.  


Chairman of the Council, Councillor Sarah Bevan said:

"Sport involves many months of dedication, hard work and commitment from all those taking part, and I know I will find my theme of excellence in the authority well demonstrated at these awards.”

Individuals, sports clubs, schools, colleges and community groups are invited to make nominations for the following categories:

1. Volunteer in sport (19 and over)
2. Volunteer in sport (18 and under)
3. Young Achiever in sport (18 and under)
4. Sports Person
5. Sports Person (with a disability)
6. Coach
7. Sports Club
8. Teacher (PE and Sport)
9. Young Sports Leader
10. Healthy Lifestyles Special Achievement Award
11. Aquaterra Special Achievement Award

All award nominees will be invited to a civic reception and presentation in March 2011, which will include demonstrations from local sports clubs and activity providers.  All nominees will receive a certificate, with the winner of each category being presented with a certificate and a Platinum membership giving one year of free swimming, sauna, gym, golf and exercise classes at Aquaterra run leisure centres in Bath & North East Somerset.
