Applications open for SkillsActive and Nancy Ovens Coaching Bursary

Voluntary coaches and leaders in the sport and active leisure sector can access innovative training with help from the 2011 SkillsActive and Nancy Ovens bursary, which is now open for applications.

The bursary, which is sponsored by SkillsActive, provides individuals with up to £2000 to improve their skills through an innovative training programme, outside the scope of regular training.

It is named after the late Nancy Ovens, a former SPRITO board member who championed the development of work-based skills in the sport and leisure industry.

Applicants are expected to create and tailor their training experience to help them develop new skills for use in their current role.

Voluntary cricket coach Alex Meddle was one of four bursary recipients in 2010. He used the funding to study how cricket programmes in Capetown, South Africa implement ethnic minority inclusion and participation in the sport. He then incorporated the lessons learned into his work with Chance to Shine.

Other bursary recipients have gained valuable experience by learning off highly experienced individuals in their field or working in a different industry setting.

Applications close on Thursday, 21 April 2011.
