Bristol College Team Invited to Europe’s Largest Taekwondo Competition

Filton College Taekwondo Academy has been invited to attend the Dutch Masters by the British Taekwondo Control Board (BTCB). The College Taekwondo squad from Bristol is the only College team in the U.K to be invited to compete in this competition.

The Dutch Masters, commencing May 28, is one of the largest Taekwondo competitions in Europe and will attract Europe’s best competitors. For 2011, the competition will be held in a fantastic new sports facility in Rotterdam that has room for 8-10 competition areas and seating for over 3000 spectators.

The BTCB is the National Governing Body for the World Taekwondo Federation Olympic Style taekwondo in the United Kingdom.

Head Coach of Filton College Taekwondo Academy, Mark Jones comments:

“It is an honour to be invited by the British Taekwondo Control Board to such a major event. My squad is really excited to be participating in the competition and looking forward to traveling with the national squad.

“I expect our team to bring home some medals. Minhyeuk Ham stands a good chance winning Gold in patterns. Jin Jae Young and Oliver Small are aiming for Gold and Charlotte Norman Silver in the Senior A Class.

“The College squad has competed at regional, National and International level over the last two years, and to gain this recognition by the British Taekwondo Control Board is a major achievement. This event will be excellent preparation for the British Control Board National Championships in June, and Korean International, which will be held at the World taekwondo Head Quarters Kukkiwon Korea, where seven members of the squad will be competing.”

With the help of the BTCB, four Academy members successfully qualified as Referee and corner judges at the end of last year. This qualification will also help the students progress in their quest to become part of the British National and Olympic taekwondo team.

Filton College taekwondo Academy’s relationship with the BTCB has enabled the College to offer Taekwondo students a direct route to the national and Olympic squads. No other organisations in the local area offer this.
