Lucy Bryan achieving great heights

Lucy Bryan a 16 year old pole vaulter from North Somerset has been named as part of the England team to compete in this year’s Commonwealth Youth Games.

It comes as no surprised that Lucy was named as part of the Commonwealth Youth England team as she has been achieving some fantastic results recently. In July this year, at the IAAF World Youth Championships held in Lille, France, Lucy won a bronze medal in pole vault. At the event, Lucy rose to the occasion clearing a height of 4.10m, which is a new personal best for her. It also put her at the top of the UK All-Time rankings for U17 women.

Lucy was awarded via Springboard last year to help her with expenses incurred at competing at such a high level. This year Lucy was recognised by her National Governing Body as having the potential to do exceptionally well within her sport and was nominated to SportsAid. SportsAid awarded her this year to give her the support she both needs and deserves. Competing at the national and international levels as Lucy does, takes a huge physical, mental and financial commitment. Both the Springboard and SportsAid awards help athletes similar to Lucy with essential costs such as travel, training, accommodation, competition fees and equipment – on which an athlete spends, on average, more than £5,000 a year.

SportsAid is the charity for sports people, helping the next generation of British sporting talent to succeed. By raising money in the name of sport, for the benefit of sport, SportsAid ensures Britain’s young sports stars have the backing they need to reach the same heights. Springboard is a partnership between, Bristol City Council, SportsAid South West, Bath and North East Somerset Council, North Somerset Council, South Gloucestershire Council, Burges Salmon Solicitors, The University of Bath – Department of Sports Development and Recreation, Team West of England and Wesport to provide grants and facilities to support the West of England’s performance athletes.

The 2011 Commonwealth youth Games will be held on the Isle of Man from the 7-13th September. The event will see athletics, badminton, boxing, cycling, gymnastics, rugby 7’s and swimming taking place, with all athletes looking at winning those top places.

The Springboard partners and all at SportsAid wish Lucy all the best for the up and coming Commonwealth Youth Games.
