As part of our 2 year partnership with local hate crime charity SARI our team and trustees attended a full days Race Equality training on Tuesday 24th January.
This training is part of our ongoing commitment to become an anti-racist organisation and proactively tackle the racial inequalities that prevent or discourage people from leading active lives.
Our learning outcomes for the first training were to be able to:
- explore privilege and how this impacts our outcomes
- become an Upstander rather than be a bystander and to move from the ‘non-’ to the ‘anti-'
The first part of the training was for the team and trustees to learn and gain a deeper understanding of the world we are living in, examining the local, national and global context of race equality and equalities. We covered topics such as:
- White Privilege and White Fragility
- Equalities Definitions – recognizing and understanding them in practice
- Bias and Groupthink
The session allowed us to have some dedicated time to start to understand the challenges many people face in day to day life. We were able to learn about the different types of bias and start to recognise them in different scenarios.
The second part to our training in February will have a greater focus on our action planning. We will start to look at what we can do as individuals, as an organisation and how we will make it happen. This training aligns with our ongoing commitment to become an anti-racist organisation and helps us on our journey to becoming upstanders in both our personal and work lives.
