LGBTQ+ Inclusion in Sports Clubs: Building More Inclusive Sporting Communities
Sport has the power to bring people together and create positive experiences for everyone involved. However, LGBTQ+ people can still face barriers to participation, discrimination, and exclusion within sporting environments. Creating inclusive sports clubs is therefore essential to ensuring that everyone can enjoy the physical, social, and mental benefits that sport provides.
This workshop by SARI, explored how sports clubs and their volunteers & coaches can play an active role in creating welcoming and inclusive spaces for LGBTQ+ participants.
Building Confidence in Conversations About LGBTQ+ Identities
One of the key aims of the session was to help attendees feel more confident when discussing LGBTQ+ identities. For many people, there can be a fear of saying the wrong thing or causing unintended offence. The workshop provided a safe space to explore common terminology, ask questions, and develop greater understanding.
Participants learnt about the importance of pronouns and how using an individual's chosen pronouns can contribute to a culture of respect and inclusion. The session also covered respectful and inclusive terminology, helping everyone build confidence in everyday interactions.
Through these discussions, sports club members gained valuable insights to help create environments where LGBTQ+ people feel recognised, respected, and valued.
Understanding Protected Characteristics and Recognising Hate Incidents
The second focus of the webinar was helping everyone understand the legal and social context surrounding LGBTQ+ inclusion.
We explored the protected characteristics and how these relate to equality and inclusion within sporting environments. The session also examined the differences between hate crimes and hate incidents, including an example of behaviours that may occur in sport settings.
We looked at how it is everyone's responsibility to identify and appropriately respond to discrimination & harassment. Through discussion points and practical examples, participants gained the valuable insights needed to try and challenge unacceptable behaviour and how they can support individuals who may be affected by it.
Becoming Effective Allies in Sport
Creating inclusive sporting environments requires more than simply avoiding discrimination. It requires active allyship and a commitment to supporting members of the LGBTQ+ community.
Throughout the session, participants were encouraged to consider the practical actions they can take within their own clubs and organisations. This included promoting inclusive language, visibly demonstrating support for LGBTQ+ participants, and responding confidently when discrimination occurs.
We also discussed how allies can use their influence to promote positive cultural change, helping to create spaces where people can participate authentically without fear of judgment or exclusion.
Creating a Culture of Belonging
Inclusive sports clubs are stronger clubs. When individuals feel safe, valued, and respected, participation grows, wellbeing improves, and communities thrive.
This event gave participants the knowledge and confidence needed to support LGBTQ+ inclusion in sport. By developing a better understanding of identities, recognising discrimination, and embracing allyship, sports professionals and volunteers can help ensure that sport remains open, welcoming, and accessible to everyone.
Together, we can create sporting environments where every individual feels they belong and has the opportunity to reach their full potential.
